Kuvasz Health

With regard to hereditary diseases, the Kuvasz is not plagued by a lot of problems compared to most other breeds.  The most common and serious problem is Canine Hip Dysplasia (CHD).  Breeders have been screening for this debilitating disease for several decades now, and the % of incidence has gone down. To a lesser degree we have seen problems with: knees, elbows, thyroid, eyes, blood diseases, and deafness.

Generally speaking, I believe that a larger percentage of Kuvasz breeders (compared with other more popular breeds) are diligent in screening their breeding stock for hereditary diseases.  But it is incumbent upon the puppy buyer to make sure that each individual breeders can supply necessary documentation to back up any health data that they claim.  If they claim that the sire and dam have OFA good hips, you should either get a copy of the OFA status report or find the dogs yourself on the OFA data base.

To find out more about the individual health issues I have broken them up into orthopedic problems (hips, elbows and knees), auto-immune problems (thyroid and vWD), and other health issues.
